Ginko Biloba Dreams
By Jack Shepherd
He is not the type of person one would instantly imagine as requiring the aid of an herbal supplement for any reason, especially memory or brain function. However, recently he found himself on a regiment of daily multivitamins and ginko biloba, which brought with them some unexpected and disconcerting side effects. He likes to think of himself as being focused, aware, and having a great memory. He is still a young adult, and has never had any health problems, especially related to his brain. Still, he notices from time to time, for whatever reason, that he loses focus, say, while driving. And, also that he loses bits of conversations to time, especially conversations not especially riveting to his personal interests. For these reasons, he decided to begin taking a daily dose of ginko biloba, as well as a multivitamin. After several weeks, he has noticed a slight increase in his awareness and mental acuity. At first though, he was plagued by vivid dreams and nightmares of outrageous premise. Situations so bizarre, and yet so real, that he would awake confused, sometimes horrified. These dreams defy explanation, including people and places familiar to him, strangers he has no recollection of ever meeting, and places he doesn’t believe he’s ever been. Normally, dreams include these elements, but never with this much detail and clarity. He experienced, nightly, the feeling of being awake in a bizarre alternate reality. It has now been over 4 weeks since beginning to ingest the herbal supplement, and he has noticed a marked decrease in these vivid dreams. He has not noticed any decrease in my mental acuity. This could be due to the fact that it remains heightened, or to the fact that the perceived increase was actually imagined. Either way, he continues to swallow the capsules once every day. He doesn’t know why he had these dreams. He assumes it was due to the desired increased-circulation-to-the-brain effect of ginko biloba. He has never heard of it having this effect on anyone else, and the bottle bares no warning. Maybe one day he will start having the dreams again. Maybe he will lose the motivation to continue the regiment long before they come back. Maybe they won’t come back at all. Who knows? He would be curious to know whether other people experience this, or if it is due to his particular brain chemistry, or some other environmental influence.
