NORTH CAROLINA’S AQUATIC LIFE FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA Emerald Isle, “the Gem of the Crystal Coast”, takes its name from the large maritime forests on the island. Family-oriented, Emerald Isle is consistently ranked among the top resort communities in the US. Emerald Isle beaches are quieter, swim-able, family-fun oriented. Emerald Isle and the surrounding area offer a wide variety of activities for the family. Pine Knoll Shores and Emerald Isle are the beautiful and perfect family getaway any time of the year. Attracting families from across the nation, coastal Pine Knoll Shores is home to the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The aquarium is a major attraction showcasing the area's maritime and marine history. The Aquarium houses more than 4,000 animals representing 220 species. Your family can learn about environmental education and conservation here at the aquarium. They have educational, hands on exhibits and features throughout the year. Pine Knoll Shores is full of interesting things for every one of all ages. New to the Aquarium are a pair of playful river otters and a cypress swamp display. They have both free and fee-based programs. Your family can get out and enjoy their natural surroundings. You can arrange to tour the aquarium behind the scene tours with Dinner with Critters and Breakfast with Ray’s programs. Family fun nights are every Thursday after five o’clock. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
