Prince and Purple Rain
Born June 7, 1958, Prince Rogers Nelson was name after the Prince Rogers Trio his father’s jazz band. His father John was a jazz pianist. Prince Rogers Nelson soon taught himself to play the piano, guitar, and drums and soon also began writing music and lyrics. He was a musical prodigy who was destined to become a star. This young man with a talent for music had begun a career with much promise. Soon he became a popular American songwriter, lyricist and performer. Prince’s soundtrack album Purple Rain was one of the biggest hits of the eighties. When it was released in 1984, Purple Rain was a sensation. For six straight months, more people bought the soundtrack to "Purple Rain" than any other album in the world. Purple Rain soon became Prince’s first album to reach number one. It was based on major portions of Prince's own life. The lyrics are soulful, the guitars are spectacular. Purple Rain traces the artistic rise and familial conflicts of a local Minneapolis pop star. Prince let it be known he could get down on his knees and make his guitar cry with the best of them. Prince won the academy award for best original song score for Purple Rain, and the album ranked in the top. 1984's Purple Rain was so big that it made him a superstar. Purple Rain was released at the perfect time when music videos were just becoming a major part of popular culture. Prince is the only artist since The Beatles to have a number one movie, Purple Rain and Purple Rain soundtrack all at the same time. The music on Purple Rain is generally regarded as the most pop-oriented of Prince's career. Purple Rain shows Prince’s growing maturity as a lyricist and it finds him attempting to deal with deeper emotions. |
